Viewed by many as the pinnacle of Japanese exploitation cinema, the films chronicle the adventures of disgraced Shogun assassin Ogami Itto (Tomisaburo Wakayama) and his son Daigoro (Akihiro Tomikawa), who sell their services as assassins while continuing their bloody quest for revenge against the hit squad who killed Itto's wife. In 'Sword of Vengeance' (1971), executioner Ogami Itto is framed for treason and declared an outlaw. Accompanied only by his young son Daigoro, he sets out on a trail of vengeance against the secret society that murdered his wife and poisoned his reputation. In 'Babycart at the River Styx' (1972), Ogami Itto - aka 'Lone Wolf' - continues his bloody quest through the land he calls Hell. The Yagyu clan are determined to see him dead, and send the deadly female assassins, the Akashi after him. Beyond them, Lone Wolf must defeat the Gods of death in order to win his 500 pieces of gold. In 'Babycart to Hades' (1973), the Lone Wolf provides a rare display of compassion when he rescues a young girl from her pimp. On the road again, the Wolf finds his services in demand, as he and the child Diagoro - the Cub - travel a violent path to Hades. In the fourth film, 'Babycart in Peril' (1972), the Wolf has become separated from his Cub, who has fallen into the hands of Itto's deadly rival. A rescue is effected, but Itto must now carry out his latest assignment; to kill tattooed martial arts mistress Oyuki (Michie Azuma). In 'Babycart in the Land of Demons' (1973), Lone Wolf is hired by the Kuroda clan to protect the destiny of its succession. This duty leads him into a confrontation with the evil Retsudo (Minoru Ohki), as well as forcing him to turn against the very clan he is supposed to be protecting. In 'White Heaven in Hell' (1974), the Wolf and his Cub face a new peril when the Yagyu clan leader Retsudo employs his bloodthirsty daughter to destroy them once and for all. If she fails in her task, Retsudo will unleash the supernatural might of the Yagyu army, against which even the Lone Wolf cannot stand. She threatens to reveal the theft in order to blackmail him into doing what she says and soon the lives of all three of them become entangled to an unhealthy degree. In 'Female Prisoner #701 - Scorpion' (1972) Matsu (Kaji), better known as Scorpion, lands in prison thanks to the evil manipulations of an ex-boyfriend. After suffering at the hands of the jailers and other prisoners, she must find a way to escape in order to get her revenge. In 'Female Prisoner #701 - Scorpion: Jailhouse 41' (1972) Matsu exacts a grim revenge on the male wardens at the prison. No male appendage is secure as she stalks the wings in a razor-frenzy. After enduring further brutal punishment, Matsu forms a new plan to escape, this time with the help of six fellow inmates. 'Female Prisoner #701 - Scorpion: Beast Stable' (1973) follows an escaped Matsu as she attempts to outrun her pursuers. After taking refuge in the home of a prostitute, things become difficult when she finds trouble with a local gang. Finally, in 'Female Prisoner Scorpion #701's Grudge Song' (1973) Matsu attempts to get revenge on a corrupt detective. In 'Shikoku' (1999), Hinako (Yui Natsukawa) returns home to Shikoku and learns that her childhood friend Sayori (Chiaki Kuriyama) drowned several years ago. Sayori's mother Teruko (Toshie Negishi), a Shinto priestess, is acting strangely and as Hinako investigates, she learns about an ancient folk-tale that could bring her friend back to life. 'Isola: Multiple Personality Girl' (2000) is set in the aftermath of the Kobe Earthquake in 1995. Yukari Kamo (Yoshino Kimura) is a psychic who travels to the area to help survivors but when she meets Chihiro Moritani (Yû Kurosawa), a girl with dissociative identity disorder, she realises that the trauma Chihiro has experienced has caused something dangerous to unfurl in her mind. In 'Inugami' (2001) young schoolteacher Akira (Atsuro Watabe) falls in love with with a local papermaker, Miki (Yuki Amami). Miki's family have lived in the same village for 900 years and, unbeknownst to Akira, are the guardians of evil spirits known as inugami. With Miki distracted by her new love, the spirits are able to slip loose from her control and inflict terrible harm on those who challenge them. In 'St. John's Wort' (2001) Nami (Megumi Okina) has been creating artwork for a new video game based on images she's been seeing in her dreams. Accompanied by one of the game producers, Kohei (Yôichirô Saitô), she travels out to an abandoned house that she has recently inherited from her estranged father. As the pair explore the old mansion, filming their expedition with a digital camera and beaming the results back to their company as they go, they make a series of horrifying and grisly discoveries and also begin to realise that they themselves are being watched by a mysterious and malevolent presence through surveillance cameras in every room of the house. 'Carved: The Slit-Mouthed Woman' (2007) follows Kyoko Yamashita (Eriko Satô), a teacher investigating the disappearances of several children with help from her co-worker Noboru Matsuzaki (Haruhiko Katô). They soon come to realise that the spirit taking the children has ties to Noboru's own tragic past. In 'Persona' (2000) a bullied student adopts a new persona when he begins wearing a ceramic mask at school and soon, other students begin to follow his example. Using the anonymity bestowed by the masks, they act without fearing the consequences of their behaviour. Finally, 'Noroi: The Curse' (2005) follows paranormal researcher Masafumi Kobayashi (Jin Muraki) as he investigates the legend of an ancient demon. 'Burning Dog' (1991) follows a gang of thieves who plan to rob an American military base in Okinawa but the heist ends in disaster and betrayal. In 'Female Prisoner Scorpion: Death Threat' (1991) an elite assassin tasked with entering a women's prison and eliminating an infamous prisoner encounters more than she bargained for during the course of her mission. 'The Hitman: Blood Smells Like Roses' (1991) follows Yuichiro Takanashi (Hideki Saijô) who takes on the yakuza in a desperate, revenge-fuelled frenzy after his fiancée is shot and killed. In 'Danger Point: The Road to Hell' (1991) yakuza hitmen Joji (Jô Shishido) and Ken (Aikawa) embark on a mission to locate a large amount of missing money and find their partnership tested in the process.
