When an obsessed fan begins stalking her, she becomes increasingly paranoid and her mental health deteriorates. Finding it difficult to distinguish between reality and the character she is playing, she begins to fear that she might be responsible when people connected to her begin to die. På väg till det nya huset stannar Chihiro och hennes föräldrar vid en avlägsen och övergiven rastplats. Föräldrarna tar för sig av den mat som bjuds, medan Chihiro är mycket vaksam. När kvällen faller på och stället fylls av andar, finner hon sina föräldrar förvandlade till grisar. En mystisk pojke, Haku, lovar att hjälpa henne bryta förbannelsen innan det är för sent. Under tiden tar hon jobb på ett märkligt hotell bebott av tusentals av Japans gudar och andar.

Systrarna Tsatsuki och Mei har flyttat till landet eftersom deras mamma ligger på ett sjukhus i närheten. De upptäcker snart att det finns något magiskt i huset och i skogen intill. På en av sina promenader träffar de sin nya granne Totoro, en stor, lustig varelse som är skogens väktare. En gång för länge sedan konstuerade människor mäktiga, flygande städer. Men något hände och alla utom en - Laputa - förstördes. Åren gick och minnet av Laputa förvandlades till en legend.
