When a series of murders are committed in Tokyo, a distinguishing mark connects them all: a bloody 'X' carved into the neck of each victim. In each case the murderer is found near the scene of the crime with no memory of committing it. The perpetrators are revealed to be ordinary citizens who all interacted with the same mysterious man shortly before inexplicably killing someone. Närvaron blir total på grund av extremt väl genomförda praktiska effekter vilka frammanar bilder av artärfontäner och lemlästningar som inte kommer lämna tittarnas minne i första taget.

Set in Korea in the 1930s, with the country under Japanese colonial rule, the film follows orphaned pickpocket Sook-hee (Tae Ri Kim) who is hired by a con artist posing as Japanese Count Fujiwara (Jung-Woo Ha) to act as the handmaiden of heiress Lady Hideko (Min-hee Kim), a ploy which Fujiwara hopes will allow him to pocket the heiress' wealth for himself. As Sook-hee tries to persuade Lady Hideko to fall for the Count she instead is the one who forges an intimate bond with her new employer. In 1986 in a small town in Gyeonggi Province, Detective Park Doo-man (Song Kang-ho) and his partner, Detective Cho Yong-koo (Kim Roe-ha), investigate the brutal rape and murder of two women discovered in a ditch. They are aided in their investigation by Seoul detective Seo Tae-yoon (Kim Sang-kyung), whose methods clash with Park's.
