Cherilyn Sarkisan föddes den 20:e maj 1946 i El Centro, Kalifornien. Hon upptäcktes 17 år gammal av Sonny Bono, som också blev hennes man. Inledningsvis körade hon på låtar skapade av demonproducenten Phil Spector. Cher och Sonny försökte sig på några egna projekt, men de gick inget vidare. Inte förrän de släppte "I got you babe" 1965. Låten blev parets genombrott och en riktig popklassiker. Efter det har Cher radat upp hitlåtarna. Hon har dessutom hunnit med att medverka i filmer som Silkwood, Mask, Häxorna i Eastwick och inte minst Mångalen som gav henne en Oscar.
