She sees herself as a 'little piece of a big, big universe' inhabiting a semi-magical world where everything is part of an interrelated, organic whole. With an absent mother, and her father sick, Hushpuppy's tenacious character and survival instincts are soon tested to the limits, when the onset of a colossal storm threatens to obliterate the unprotected community.
