Chantal Akerman

Franska Beatrice (Juliette Binoche) byter under en period lägenhet med Henry (William Hurt), en framgångsrik men pryd amerikansk psykoanalytiker. Henry flyttar in i hennes bohemiska lya i Paris, medan hon får bo i hans exklusiva lägenhet på Manhattan i New York. Detta utan att de någonsin träffat varandra. Efter en tid bestämmer sig Henry för att flytta hem igen ? sedan han blivit överfallen av Beatrices älskare. Men på hemmaplan har det hänt en hel del! Hans tidigare depressiva patienter har blivit glada och harmoniska, och till och med hans hund är på märkbart bättre humör. För att ta reda på hur Beatrice lyckats med detta utger han sig för att vara en av sina egna patienter och börjar gå i terapi hos henne...
