Från regissören Christopher Nolan får vi berättelsen om ett gäng pionjärer som tar sig an det viktigaste uppdraget i mänsklighetens historia. Oscarsvinnaren Matthew McConaughey spelar Cooper som leder en expedition bortom vår egen galax för att ta reda på om vi människor har en framtid bland stjärnorna. Polisen Will Dormer (Al Pacino) får i uppdrag att tillsammans med sin kollega Hap Eckhart (Martin Donovan) åka till den avlägsna fiskestaden Nightmute i Alaska för att utreda mordet på 17-åriga Kay Connell.<br/><br/>Dormer gillrar en fälla för mördaren som han och kollegan Eckhart jagar, men när mördaren ska gripas råkar Dormer av misstag skjuta ihjäl Eckhart.
