Den ene är en raffinerad, polerad och belevad bedragare. Den andre är bara en bedragare. Två lumpna bovar - Steve Martin och Michael Caine ñ ödelägger Rivieran i denna skickliga, charmiga, snitsiga och allt igenom roliga komedi. Martin spelar Freddy Benson, en småkriminell skojare som lurar till sig färdmedel på sin skurkaktiga resa genom Europa. Lawrence Jamieson (Caine) - en oklanderligt klädd och högfärdig konstnär - anser att Freddy drar skam inte bara över honom, utan över hela yrkeskåren av sol och värme.
