After a series of dangerous missions, the pilots are struggling and when Davenport is replaced by the callous Brigadier General Frank Savage (Peck), the latter's attempts to whip the crew into shape result in a deluge of requests for transfers. However, young Lieutenent Jesse Bishop (Robert Patten) rallies his fellow pilots and soon they and Savage begin to develop a mutual respect for each other. When Julie reveals to Billy that she is carrying his child, Billy worries about not being able to provide for his family and agrees to join his low-life acquaintance Jigger Craigin (Cameron Mitchell) in a robbery. When they discover that their target, the wealthy Mr Bascombe (John Dehner), is unusually armed, Billy panics and reaches for his knife.
