Efter ett beväpnat rånförsök mot deras hem, gör det unga paret Michael och Karren Carr (Kurt Russel och Madeline Stowe) det alla skulle göra - de ringer polisen. De träffar Los Angeles-polisen Pete Davis (Ray Liotta) och blir genast lugnade av hans varma och känslosamma attityd.<br/><br/> Han gör parets säkerhet till sin personliga uppgift, och börjar personligen att patrullera omkring deras hus. Men hans vänskap utvecklas med tiden till en förvriden fixering, och Davis tränger sig allt längre in i deras liv. Kastad in i en mardröm där beskyddaren blir till hotet, måste paret försöka fly från det säkerhetsnät som har blivit deras värsta fiende.
