However, the harsh realities of trench warfare soon shatter his youthful idealism and desire to prove himself and as he watches many of his friends die, he begins to lose hope. When Australian forces assist in the attack on the Hindenburg Line in 1918, Collins puts his life on the line as he cannot bear to leave another man behind.
