Spanien, 1936. När den nyligen utropade demokratin hotas av general Francos armé är inbördeskriget ett faktum. Ända sedan Ricky och Abby gifte sig och bildade familj har de velat ge sina älskade barn en trygg uppväxt, helst i eget hus. Nu har dottern Liz hunnit bli elva, sonen Seb är sexton och husdrömmen känns mer avlägsen än någonsin. I sitt stressiga vårdjobb kämpar Abby varje dag mot klockan för att hinna ge sina patienter en känsla av människovärde. 'The Big Flame' (1967) and 'Rank and File' (1971) are trademark Loach dramas, detailing with sympathy the plight of workers caught up in industrial disputes at the Liverpool docks and the Pilkington glassworks, respectively. 'Three Clear Sundays' (1965) tells the story of Danny (Tony Selby), a young man facing up to the death penalty after an attempt to help reduce the sentence of two other prison inmates goes badly wrong. 'Days of Hope' (1975) is an epic four-part series starring Paul Copley, Pamela Brighton and Nikolas Simmonds as members of a working class family whose fortunes are depicted from the end of WWI to what they perceive as their betrayal in the General Strike of 1926. 'The End of Arthur's Marriage' (1965) offers something of a departure from Loach's conventional films, an adaptation of a musical scripted by Christopher Logue. 'In Two Minds' (1967) stars Anna Cropper and examines the plight of those suffering from schizophrenia. 'Up the Junction' (1965) raised the issue of abortion, at the time illegal, and played a major role in shaping public debate on the issue. Its influence in this regard was possibly only surpassed by Loach's most famous TV drama 'Cathy Come Home' (1966), which follows the struggles of young bride Cathy (Carol White) as she struggles to keep a roof over herself and her children in a housing system that seems constantly to be working against her. In 'Riff Raff' (1991) former jailbird Stevie (Robert Carlyle) travels to London, finds work on a building site, and sets up home in an abandoned flat. One day he discovers a handbag in a skip and returns it to its owner, aspiring singer Susan (Emer McCourt). The pair begin a romance, but Susan's drug use soon puts a strain on their relationship and an accident at work, caused by the building company's unscrupulous cost-cutting, brings tensions to a head. In 'Raining Stones' (1993) unemployed and penniless Bob (Bruce Jones) is desperate to earn enough money to pay for his daughter Coleen (Gemma Phoenix)'s communion dress. Unable to raise the cash any other way, he ends up borrowing from a vicious loan shark who then proceeds to terrorise Bob's wife and threaten further violence. As the communion approaches, the family seem locked into an impossible situation. In 'Ladybird Ladybird' (1994) Maggie Conlon (Crissy Rock) is a downtrodden woman who has had her children taken away by the social services for being an unfit mother. When Maggie then meets a kind and gentle Chilean refugee, they become lovers and move in together. 'Jag, Daniel Blake' handlar om den 59-årige snickaren Daniel (Dave Johns) som på grund av sjukdom blivit arbetslös.
