Hela världen följer den första bemannade resan till Mars, medan de tre astronauterna är indragna i en hårresande kamp för överlevnad, i en hemlig operation som involverar intriger och mord. Astronauterna beordras att delta i en genomtänkt charad, där de simulerar en landning på Mars medan kamerorna rullar och hela världen är deras publik. Astronauterna, som vet att deras blotta existens utgör ett hot mot nationell säkerhet, flyr i hopp om att en av dem ska överleva och avslöja det sensationella bedrägeriet. Farligt möte bygger på en klassisk film-noir, och berättar historien om en advokat (Gene Hackman) som ska hämta ett vittne (Anne Archer) i San Fransisco till en mordrättegång. Vittnet Carol blir dock jagad av gangsters och väl vetande att hon är det enda vittnet till mordet, flyr hon till en avskilt belägen stuga i Kanada. Hon blir skuggad av advokaten Caulfield men båda blir spårade till stugan och nu tvingas de fly för sitt liv på ett kanadensiskt tåg...
