Frånskilde och helt vanlige engelsmannen William Thacker (Hugh Grant) äger en liten bokhandel i Notting Hill, London. Han bor tillsammans med den originelle walesaren Spike (Rhys Ifans). En dag kommer en av världens största filmstjärnor, Anna Scott (Julia Roberts) in i bokhandeln, och efter det blir ingenting sig likt för varken henne eller William.
