The story concerns the activities of assassin Chang and his brother Hung, both small-time highwaymen. They befriend an ambitious soldier Ma, after attempting to rob him. The trio swear allegiance and gather about them a private army in the mountains, but the arrival of Hung's beautiful wife Mai unleashes hidden desires and Ma is forced to leave to join the Imperial Army. Years later, now a General, Ma summons his two brothers to join him in a war against the rebels. Their victories bring fame and fortune, but Ma is still besotted with Mai, and plots Hung's murder.
