He arrives in London, shacking up with his ex-girlfriend, Louise (Lesley Sharp), and her gothic flatmate, Sophie (Katrin Cartlidge), before drifting onto the streets - undergoing a series of encounters which convince him of the spiritual emptiness of modern life. Accompanied by his daughter-in-law, Marianne (Ingrid Thulin) who is travelling to meet her estranged husband, Isak finds himself the subject of unsettling visions from his past, recalling lost loves and his own failed marriage.
