However, when they come up against the Italian Mafia, they enter into a fight that they may not be able to win. If he pays the ransom he will be ruined financially but if he does not, he will be unable to face his family or Aoki. Pilkington is plagued with self-doubt regarding his own personal conduct, finding it difficult to square his own homosexuality with his religious beliefs. This conflict becomes more urgent when his relationship with a young man is made public and he discovers that a member of his congregation is abusing his daughter, but is bound from intervening by the sanctity of confession.
