If he pays the ransom he will be ruined financially but if he does not, he will be unable to face his family or Aoki. Pilkington is plagued with self-doubt regarding his own personal conduct, finding it difficult to square his own homosexuality with his religious beliefs. This conflict becomes more urgent when his relationship with a young man is made public and he discovers that a member of his congregation is abusing his daughter, but is bound from intervening by the sanctity of confession.
