'Culloden' (1964) depicts the 1746 Battle of Culloden in which the British Army defeated the outnumbered Scottish Jacobite forces and shows events before and after the Jacobite rising was defeated. The film presents the historical event as if it was being featured on a modern TV report, by portraying the action as a documentary and interviewing the actors involved in the battle. Tahei (Minoru Chiaki) and Matashichi (Kamatari Fujiwara) are two peasants hoping to make their fortunes by becoming soldiers but they run into trouble when they are mistaken for members of the Akizuki clan which has just been defeated after a fierce battle. Meanwhile, Rokurota Makabe (Mifune), a renowed Akizuki general, is attempting to escort Princess Yuki (Misa Uehara) to safety. When he encounters the two peasants, he realises they may be useful to him but as the four of them travel together, they face many challenges and Tahei and Matashichi's cowardice and greed could jeopardise Makabe's mission.
