This conflict becomes more urgent when his relationship with a young man is made public and he discovers that a member of his congregation is abusing his daughter, but is bound from intervening by the sanctity of confession. Wealthy business executive Kingo Gondo (Mifune) faces a terrible choice when a kidnapper snatches the son of his chauffeur Aoki (Yutaka Sada) instead of his own son. If he pays the ransom he will be ruined financially but if he does not, he will be unable to face his family or Aoki.
