Varje år hittar Brad (Vince Vaughn) och Kate (Reese Witherspoon) på den ena lögnen värre än den andra för att slippa fira jul med sina familjer. Denna jul är planen att fly till varmare breddgrader, men ett oväder gör så att alla flyg blir inställda. Paret tvingas tacka ja till en familjemiddag hos Kates mamma (Mary Steenburgen) och det ena leder till det andra. Innan de vet ordet av har paret lovat att fira jul med samtliga av sina fyra frånskilda föräldrar.
