With the other heirs attempting to stop Joyce from fulfilling the terms of her inheritance, only Wally Campbell (Hope) strives to help Joyce survive the night mentally and physically intact. In 'The Ghost Breakers' (1940) Mary Carter (Goddard) inherits a supposedly haunted mansion in Cuba and is determined to claim her rightful home despite anonymous warnings and death threats. Meanwhile, radio broadcaster Larry Lawrence (Hope) finds himself tied up in the murder of a gangster and aims to flee New York. Seeking refuge in a random trunk, Larry soon finds himself on a ship bound for Cuba. As he begins to fall in love with her Nestor does all he can to stop her seeing other clients so he invents a fictitious British Lord to become her sole client. When she refuses this assistance Chan stages a mock assassination attempt in order to have her comply. However, after discovering Chan's ruse Selina does not attend the trial and Chu Tao is released on bail. With Chu Tao back on the streets Selina is in more danger than ever before. Can Chan protect her as well as bring Chu Tao to justice? In the sequel, 'Police Story 2' (1988), Chan has been demoted to traffic duties following his heavy-handed manner.
