Los Angeles, 30 december 1999. Det är 48 timmar kvar till år 2000. Världen står på randen till ett nytt sekel. Lenny Nero är en fd polis som numera försörjer sig på att sälja illegala "clips", digitala inspelningar av verkliga händelser av vad andra människor känt och upplevt. Han säljer clips med det mesta, dvs lite sex, lite våld, lite romantisk kärlek. Lenny har dock yrkesstoltheten att inte syssla med sk "black-jacks", clips som innehåller autentiska mord. Men när Iris, en nära vän mördas av en hänsynslös gangster och lenny får ta del av detta blir han indragen i en sjaskig värld av intriger och förräderi. I ett försök att rädda sin fd flickvän Faithe får Lenny hjälp av de enda han kan lita på, säkerhetsvakten Mace och kollegan Max. Lenny försöker med alla medel att hålla sig vid liv de få timmarna som återstår tills det nästa seklets intåg.
