British pianist Django Bates returns to ECM with one of his very finest constellations, the trio Belovèd, with Swedish bassist Petter Eldh and Danish drummer Peter Bruun, and an aptly named album, "The Study of Touch". All three musicians are highly individual players, subtly challenging the conventions of the jazz piano trio. The group came together a decade ago when Bates was teaching at Copenhagen's Rhythmic Music Conservatory. The shared work has included inspired reconstructions of pieces associated with Charlie Parker - a formative influence for both Bates and bassist Eldh - and in this new album, Parker's tune "Passport" is set amid Django originals, and played with respect, contemporary sensibility and joy. Some of Django's own tunes here - such as "Senza Bitterness", "Sadness All The Way Down" and "We Are Not Lost, We Are Simply Finding Our Way" have become core pieces in Belovèd's repertoire, continually remodeled by this trio of improvisers. Bates' composing and arranging skills are much in evidence, along with his freewheeling, free-flowing virtuosic melodic sense. The terse, percussive edge of Petter Eldh's bass provides momentum and drummer Peter Bruun details the music with an almost painterly touch. In the crowded world of the piano trio, Belovèd has developed a sound all its own. "The Study of Touch" was recorded at Oslo's Rainbow Studio in June 2016, and produced by Manfred Eicher.

Digipack.<br/><br/>Gunnar Siljabloo Nilson blev tidigt inspirerad av Artie Shaw. Han var självlärd, kanske en anledning till att klarinetten verkligen blev en förlängning av honom själv. Detsamma gällde hans sätt att sjunga. Hans dramatiska och uttrycksfulla rörelser gjorde honom till jazzens showman. Han fick verkligen publiken med sig när han uppträdde på scenen. I Jacques Werup's bok "Lev länge, dö ung" är romanfiguren Lennie Blue en uppdiktad gestalt inspirerad av Siljabloo. <br/><br/>"Det var på Nalen, i maj -53. Topsy hade för en gångs skull själv gått upp på scenen och presenterat "idolen" uppifrån det vilda Notviken. Lennie hade kommit in i guldlamésmoking och sjungit "Illusions", en stillsam Benny Carter-grej. Sällan hade en artist fått såna ovationer för en ballad. Så gjorde han inte heller hopen besviken. Det blev spex och scat, gycklarkonster i allvaret. Lennie vände ut och in på kavajen och satte slipsen som en mustach under näsan, härmade både Hitler och Stalin. Packet tjöt av hänförelse, kåken håll på att sprängas. Lennart hade då äntligen blivit Lennie Blue med jazzdiggarna, genombrottsvaxet hade nåt år på nacken. Sålt i över tjugotusen ex. En jazzplatta!" Folk var som galna, kunde inte få nog." <br/><br/>Siljabloo avled av en hjärtattack på tåget till en spelning. Han var en oförliknelig sångare och klarinettist, ett äkta naturbarn som blev mycket folkkär. En av den svenska jazzens största glädjespridare.

Fröken Elvis projekt tillhör tveklöst årets största utropstecken på den svenska musikscenen. Gruppens föreställningar på Stockholms Stadsteater i våras sålde ut på nolltid, låten Leverera (A Little Less Conversation på svenska) har blivit en omtalad P4-hit - och om ett par veckor spelar Fröken Elvis i London. Förklaringen till framgångarna är helt enkel så självklar som att det faktiskt är exceptionellt väl genomfört. Utan att tidigare ha haft någon djupare relation till Elvis Presley har Camilla Fritzén, Maria Olsson, Sanna Andersson, Josefin Berge och Lisa Bodelius lyckats skapa åtta svenska texter och musikaliska nytolkningar som på ett tidlöst sätt träffar rätt.
