Unhappily, his mother suffers from Alzheimer's and is unable to remember her son, though his daughter, Analia (Giselle Irrazabal), can't remember him for a different reason - his prolonged absence. Costa continues filming the former residents of Fontainhas, as he has done for two decades, and reunites with retired labourer Ventura who emigrated from the former Portuguese colony of Cape Verde in the early 1970s and has over the years become a father figure of sorts to an array of displaced and disenfranchised young people in and around the slum.
