'Walkover' (1965) stars Skolimowski as his alter-ego Andrzej Leszczyc who is facing a crisis caused by the fact that the end of his youth is rapidly approaching. Having dropped out of engineering school, boxer Andrzej reconnects with Teresa (Aleksandra Zawieruszanka), a former classmate who now works as a manager at an energy plant. She gets him a job offer but rather than work, he instead wants to take part in an amateur boxing tournament. Although they are fundamentally different people, romance blossoms between them. 'Barrier' (1966) stars Jan Nowicki as a medical student struggling to find his place in the world. Seeking to overcome all of life's obstacles, he wanders through Warsaw without purpose until a young tram driver (Joanna Szczerbic) catches his attention. Finally, in 'Dialogue 20 40 60' (1968), three directors - Skolimowski, Peter Solan and Zbynek Brynych - each tell a version of a story in which couples aged 20, 40 and 60 speak the same dialogue in very different settings.

Typ: Blu-ray / Limited Edition Box Set

OBS! Import. Kontrollera att språk och textning passar dig.

A collection of three classic Polish films. Set in the late 1800s, 'The Promised Land' (1975), follows the underhand methods three friends, a Polish aristocrat (Daniel Olbrychski), a Jew (Wojciech Pszoniak), and a German (Andrzej Seweryn), employ as they try to get their fledgling factory off the ground in the newly industrialised textile manufacturing centre of Lodz. Director Krzysztof Zanussi's 'Illumination' (1972), is a semi-autobiographical investigation into truth and enlightenment, as seen through the eyes of graduate physics student Franciszek Retman (Stanislaw Latallo). As he searches for the meaning of life through his studies and his involvement with those he comes into contact with, Franciszek comes to realise that life, as such, is outwith our control. Finally, in 'Escape from 'Liberty' Cinema' (1990), a Polish provincial censor is taken aback when the actors in the film he is watching decide that they've had enough, and refuse to speak their lines. After summoning help from party officials and realising the scenario echoes Woody Allen's film 'The Purple Rose of Cairo', the situation quickly deteriorates when, whilst demonstrating the similarities, the two films are accidently superimposed on one another.

Typ: DVD

One strand of the film follows the life of Dzidziús (Edward Dziewonski), a wily coward who tries everything in his power to avoid danger when recruited into the military. The other story is set in a POW camp, where Lt. Zawistowski (Tadeusz Lomnicki) appears especially eager to escape, but is he determined to rejoin the war effort or simply unable to stand the inmates with whom he shares a cell? 'Night Train' (1959), a fast-paced, Hitchcock-influenced mystery directed by Jerzy Kawalerowicz, is set aboard a train headed for the Baltic coast. Jerzy (Leon Niemczyk) and Marta (Lucyna Winnicka) end up sharing a sleeping compartment by mistake and are brought together by the fact that they are both on the run from something. However, while Marta is merely trying to evade a jealous former lover, the arrival of police on the train suggests that Jerzy is implicated in something far more sinister. 'Innocent Sorcerers' (1960), directed by Andrzej Wajda, follows a young doctor, Bazyli (Tadeusz Lomnicki), whose compulsive womanising has left him tired and all but immune to the charms of the girls who attempt to seduce him. However, when he enjoys an intense conversation with a mysterious woman, Pelagia (Krystyna Stypulkowska), who subsequently disappears, Bazyli finds himself smitten and sets off around the city in search of her. 'Goodbye, See You Tomorrow' (1960) is a story about a youthful infatuation directed by Janusz Morgenstern. When Jacek (Zbigniew Cybulski), a young actor, meets Marguerite (Teresa Tusynska), a beautiful French girl, it is love at first sight - at least for Jacek. How will the young man cope when confronted for the first time with the vicissitudes of love? A young Roman Polanski also makes an appearance.

Typ: DVD

In 'A Blonde in Love' (1965) young factory worker Andula (Hana Brejchova) meets a pianist at a dance in her rural town and spends the night with him. After he leaves she becomes infatuated with him and accepts his flippant invitation to visit him in Prague. In 'The Party and the Guests' (1966) a group of happy, carefree picnickers are accosted by a group of thugs led by sadist Rudolf (Jan Klusák) who quickly gains an unbreakable hold over the group and subjects them to a cruel psychological game in which he acts as an interrogator. The ordeal is interrupted by the arrival of a stranger (Ivan Vyskocil) who invites the whole party to a nonsensical yet elegant and formal outdoor banquet. As the bizarre games continue, one member of the party chooses to run away, leading the entire group to take arms and hunt him down. 'Larks On a String' (1990) tells the stories of the various characters interned in a labour camp in 1950s Communist-run Prague. The residents have been deemed counter-revolutionary and bourgeois by the Czech government and are forced to spend their days sorting out piles of scrap metal for the purposes of re-education. As they toil, the workers, who include a literature professor, a public prosecutor, a dairyman, a saxophonist, a barber and a cook, philosophise and flirt amid the detritus of industrial society.

Typ: DVD

OBS! Import. Kontrollera att språk och textning passar dig.

István Szabó is perhaps the best-known of all Hungarian filmmakers, having made hugely successful, Oscar-winning films in Hungary, Europe and in Hollywood. This Box Set uncovers the most creative and exuberant period of Szabó's Hungarian cinema, with a trio of exceptional films made in collaboration with actor Klaus Maria Brandauer, writer Péter Dobai and cinematographer Lajos Koltai. These films unravel the conflicts of history, society, and the individual in a rich and dazzlingly audacious, yet personal manner. These important and powerfully relevant films are presented from stunning 4K restorations, and released for the first time on Blu-ray in the UK. The set includes: Mephisto (1981): István Szabó's Oscar-winning adaptation of Klaus Mann's novel paints a portrait of Hendrik Höfgen (Klaus Maria Brandauer), a passionate but struggling actor who, despite his political ambivalence, remains in Germany as the Nazis come to power. When he accepts a Nazi official's offer to make him a star, Höfgen finally receives the success and adulation he has long sought - but at what price? Colonel Redl (1985): Set in the years leading up to WW1, and inspired by John Osbourne's controversial 1965 play A Patriot for Me, Szabó's film charts the rise of the brilliant but unscrupulous Alfréd Redl in the Austro-Hungarian military. Compromised by his secret homosexuality, Redl is manipulated into a series of treasonous betrayals, becoming a prisoner of his own deceptions. Hanussen (1988): Wounded during WW1, an Austrian soldier claims he has gained the power to foresee the future. Adopting the name Erik Jan Hanussen, he sets himself up as a hypnotist, astrologer and clairvoyant in a Berlin theatre, ingratiating himself with those in power. Szabó's film vividly recreates the period as the film parallels the rise of Hanussen with Hitler and the Nazi regime.

Typ: Blu-ray / Box Set (Limited Edition - Restored)
