In 'Billy Liar' (1963) undertaker's clerk Billy (Tom Courtenay) escapes his dreary small-town existence by living in a fantasy world where he realises his ambitions. When his job, unsympathetic working-class family and two fiancées threaten to become too much, he meets fashionable Liz (Julie Christie), who offers him his one chance for real escape. In 'School for Scoundrels' (1960) Henry Palfrey (Ian Carmichael) is one of life's losers. Despised and disregarded at work, his prospective girlfriend April (Janette Scott) is whisked from under his nose by charming bounder Raymond Delauney (Terry-Thomas). In desperation, Henry enrols at Stephen Potter (Alastair Sim)'s College of Lifemanship, where he gradually learns how to get one up on the other fellow. In 'Hobson's Choice' (1954) Lancashire bootmaker Henry Horatio Hobson (Charles Laughton) keeps a tight rein on his three daughters, until his eldest, Maggie (Brenda De Banzie), marries his assistant Willie Mossop (John Mills) and sets him up in his own bootmaking firm. To Hobson's consternation, Willie soon becomes his father-in-law's main business rival. In 'The Happiest Days of Your Life' (1950) Nutborne is an all-boys school and content to stay that way, but after an evacuation of local private all-girls school, St. Swithins, the two educational establishments must find a way to co-exist as a battle of the sexes commences. A power struggle between Nutborne's headmaster Wetherby Pond (Sim) and St Swithins' headmistress Muriel Whitchurch (Margaret Rutherford) inevitably takes place, leading to much silliness and mayhem. Finally, in 'I'm All Right Jack' (1959), upon leaving the army, upper-class twit Stanley Windrush (Carmichael) takes a job in a missile factory. In 'Dunkirk' (1958) British Corporal 'Tubby' Binns (John Mills) finds himself responsible for getting his men back to Britain from the Dunkirk beaches in 1940, after their commanding officer is killed and they become separated from the rest of the Allied forces. Meanwhile, civilian reporter Charles Foreman (Bernard Lee) follows the build-up to the eventual evacuation of British and French troops from the beaches of Dunkirk. In 'Aces High' (1976) new air force recruit Croft (Peter Firth) takes an instant dislike to his embittered squadron leader, Gresham (Malcolm McDowell). But as the young pilot experiences the tensions and stresses of warfare, his dislike turns to admiration. In 'Went the Day Well?' (1942), set during the Second World War, a platoon of German paratroopers plan to place a signalling device in an English village in preparation for an upcoming invasion. Disguised as British troops, all goes according to plan until a vigilant local postmistress has her suspicions aroused by some clues left by the Germans. When the Germans now aware that the game is up, they quickly revert to their back-up plan and take the entire village hostage. As they try to maintain an appearance of normality in the village, the Germans soon find themselves beset by the heroic attempts of the villagers to raise the alarm to the outside world. In 'The Captive Heart' (1946) Czech Captain Karel Hasek (Michael Redgrave) impersonates a dead British officer, only to be thrown into a German POW where he begins corresponding with the British soldier's widow and finds himself falling in love. Finally, 'Angels One Five' (1952) looks at life in an RAF fighter station during the Battle of Britain. Set in the summer of 1940, a squadron of Hurricanes are followed as they take on the massive wave of Luftwaffe fighters and bombers that are intent on breaking down Britain's defences as a prequel to a German invasion.<br/><br/><i>Typ: DVD / Box Set</i>
