Under the orders of Osama bin Laden, Al Qaeda fighters launched a number of deadly attacks in the country, including two major bombings of residential compounds in Riyadh in 2003, in an attempt to take control of bin Laden's homeland and establish a worldwide Muslim empire able to take on the West.
