Efter att John Coltrane spelat in "Kind of blue" tillsammans med Miles Davis, gick han i början av maj 1959 in i studion och spelade in sin debutplatta för Atlantic. En slutlig inspelning i december fullbordade "Giant steps". En titel som talar för sig själv. Coltrane tog några sjumilakliv inom jazzen och skapade tillsammans med bl.a gänget på "Kind of blue" (minus Miles) ett av jazzhistoriens största och bästa album.
