When producer Norman Granz brought Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong together, the results were never going to be less than enjoyable. Sure enough, the resulting albums proved to be highly popular releases and have remained so decades down the line. Featured here, on this Platinum Collection, are the three complete albums Ella & Louis recorded together including bonus tracks.

He had already recorded some sides for Atlantic Records but these had been made with pick-up groups and showed 'Trane' very much in the accepted hard bop idiom, albeit making grand strides forward with his playing and harmonic searching. Here though, was the first album recorded with his new working outfit with McCoy Tyner and Elvin Jones (Steve Davis, although perfectly capable was merely the first in a line of bassists Coltrane worked his way through before settling on Jimmy Garrison). The music created for this album in late 1960 differed radically from what had preceded it as Coltrane forged his own pioneering path drawing on the modal experiments he'd been involved in with his final leader, Miles Davis.

This compilation album collects Decca tracks from 1942 onwards and covers Jordan's golden period; featuring 11 Number 1's and 5 charting in the top 10. Louis Jordan has left a real lasting legacy, as without his ground breaking musical journey in the 40's & 50's, we can genuinely say that none of the music we knew and loved thereafter may have happened. Can't say that about many artists, can you?
