Living in a small village in the woods surrounding a grand castle, Popelka (Libuse Safránková) is forced to work as a servant undertaking menial tasks for her stepmother (Carola Braunbock). One day while out riding in the forest, she comes across a prince (Pavel Trávnícek) and his hunting party. After impressing the prince with her excellent hunting skills and charming him with her witty retorts, Popelka playfully dismisses his advances before returning home to her village. He is the owner of a crematorium in the early stages of the Nazi occupation of Czechoslovakia who finds in the situation an opportunity to fulfil his business ambitions, justify his anti-Semitism and exert his obsession for control.
