Revolvermannen Munny har dragit sig tillbaka från laglösheten till ett hederligt liv. Han har två barn, försörjer sig som svinfamare och har inte rört sin revolver på 11 år. Svinen blir dock sjuka och Munny som är änkling blir orolig för sina barns framtid. När prisjägaren The Schofield Kid erbjuder honom att mot en stor belöning följa med och döda två män som knivskurit en prostituerad, så spänner han återigen på sig sitt revolverbälte.

Bounty hunters the Man With No Name (Eastwood) and Colonel Douglas Mortimer (Van Cleef) are separately hunting the ruthless bandit El Indio (Gian Maria Volonté), who is responsible for multiple bank robberies and murders. After confronting each other, they reluctantly agree to join forces and the Man With No Name earns a place on El Indio's crew as they plan another bank robbery. Will the two men succeed in working together to stop the bandits from continuing their reign of terror? The cast also includes Luigi Pistilli, Mario Brega and Klaus Kinski.
