<b>Published to mark the 250th anniversary of Caspar David Friedrich's birth, the most thorough Friedrich retrospective in many years.</b><br/><br/> Caspar David Friedrich (1774-1840) is renowned as the Romantic painter par excellence, his works icons of an age of major social upheaval. His landscape paintings and drawings broke with traditional patterns of representation, and paved new ways of both experiencing and reflecting on the ambivalent relationship between humankind and nature.<br/><br/> Accompanying the most comprehensive Friedrich retrospective in many years, this catalogue re-examines the artist's groundbreaking work in light of the urgent challenges in a time of climate crisis. It centres on more than sixty paintings, among them many major iconic works, and about 100 drawings. These reinterpretations and appropriations of Friedrich's images and themes allow the Romantic view of nature to enter into a fascinating dialogue with contemporary perspectives on nature and the discourse on ecological issues.

Bertil Vallien is ranked today as one of the world s foremost artists with glass as material. He has worked with glass for more than 60 years, and is represented, among other places, at the Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg in Russia and at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City in the United States. <br/><br/>In Atlas, we take part of Vallien s world through his thoughts, words and stories accompanied by a rich visual flow of art glass, sketches and newly taken pictures from his studio and cabin. We get a premonition of the demanding work process that results in these unique glass sculptures, which is an example of when skilled craftsmanship and artistry meet. <br/><br/>Vallien s sources of inspiration derive in everything from the story of the girl Karolina, who slept for 32 years, to the black series Desert Snow. His famous crafts have been developing from the first one in ceramics to the later ones in advanced sand casting in glass. This is a technique that he has been developing for decades, which has made it possible for him to increase the sizes of his pieces. He collects images for a personal archive that has expanded into thousands of analogue and digital files over the years, with the aim to gather images seemingly saturated with collective memories and references. These images are then composed into collages that serve as foundations for his paintings, where the familiar takes on a new shape and the unknown can still appear familiar, even giving the feeling of having returned home. <br/><br/>Jacobson has since his graduation from Malmö Art Academy (Malmö, Sweden) in 2005 exhibited at numerous solo and group exhibitions, both in Scandinavia and internationally. Recent projects include a set design with monumentally scaled paintings, originally made for a stage show and presented at Wanås Konst in Sweden, as well as an extensive solo exhibition at Vandalorum (Värnamo, Sweden). His works have also been shown in the exhibition <i>Martin Jacobson: Excursions</i> at the Nordic Watercolour Museum, (Skärhamn, Sweden), <i>Martin Jacobson: The Traveller s Guide to the Other Side</i> at La Conservera (Murcia, Spain), and in the exhibition <i>The Collectors</i>, curated by Elmgreen &amp; Dragset in the Danish Pavilion at the 2009 Venice Biennale. <br/><br/><i>The paintings in this book are a selection of the works of the past decade.
