All the while Bridget records her misadventures in her diary in an attempt to take control of her life. In 'Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason' (2004), having finally found the perfect man in Mark Darcy, Bridget is now faced with the even bigger challenge of keeping him. When her self-doubt returns and her womanising ex Daniel Cleaver reappears in her life, Bridget finds herself stuck in a Thai prison on drugs charges. As Mark fights for her release, Bridget finally realises that he is her one true love. In 'Bridget Jones's Baby' (2016), following her break-up with Mark Darcy, Bridget decides to focus on her career as a top news producer while also attempting to enjoy the single life with her friends. Her love life takes another turn when she meets suave American Jack Qwant (Patrick Dempsey), who helps her out after she gets into a spot of bother at a music festival. With a new relationship flourishing and everything seemingly under control, it's not long before there's a hitch - she discovers she's pregnant. Unsure if the father is Mark or Jack, Bridget is yet again faced with making some awkward and ultimately life-changing decisions. Finally, in 'Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy' (2025), Bridget is forced to navigate a new chapter in her life as a widow and single mother to two young children. When her husband is killed in a car crash, Alice (Ellen Burstyn) leaves her home in Socorro, New Mexico and heads west with her son Tommy (Alfred Lutter), determined to return to her home town of Monterey in California and make her own way in life as an independent woman. In order to reach Monterey however, Alice will have to stop off along the way to make enough money for her and Tommy to survive. Using the only talent she has, she plans to take singing gigs wherever possible. They stop in Arizona and Alice ends up having to work as a waitress in a diner while Tommy is largely left to fend for himself as his mum lapses back into old habits, relying on men to give her fulfilment. In 'Hindle Wakes' (1952) Jenny Hawthorne (Lisa Daniely) meets Alan Jeffcote (Brian Worth) while on holiday in Blackpool and they travel together to Wales to extend their time together. 'Love from a Stranger' (1937) finds lottery winner Carol Howard (Ann Harding) marrying Gerald Lovell (Basil Rathbone) but soon realising she might be in danger. In 'Flood Tide' (1934) an aging couple hope that their son will finally settle down and start a family with his childhood sweetheart. 'Penny Serenade' (1941) follows Julie Gardiner (Irene Dunne) and Roger Adams (Cary Grant) as they fall in love, marry and struggle to have a family. Finally in 'The Strange Love of Martha Ivers' (1946) Martha (Barbara Stanwyck) is married to Walter (Kirk Douglas) but she doesn't love him.
