In 16th century Japan, rival warlords battle for supremacy. Impoverished potter Genjuro (Masayuki Mori) leaves his wife Miyagi (Kinuyo Tanaka) and their son to take his wares to the city to sell, despite Miyagi's fears for their safety with an army so close by. His brother Tobei (Sakae Ozawa), who dreams of becoming a samurai, also leaves his wife Ohama (Mitsuko Mito) and accompanies Genjuro.
