In 1920s Chicago, ambitious Italian immigrant Tony Camonte (Muni) works his way up through the ranks of a bootlegging operation. As he ruthlessly takes out his competition, he becomes more powerful and draws attention from other gangsters as well as the police, who want to put a stop to his violent activities. However, it is his relationship with his younger sister Francesca (Dvorak), of whom he is fiercely overprotective, which will bring about his ruin.
