På ytan förefaller Donnie Darko vara en ganska vanlig amerikansk tonåring. Men under ytan lurar tvångstankarna, och bakom en intelligent fasad lever han i sin egen mörkervärld. Han ingår en pakt med sin osynlige vän, Frank, som lovar Donnie insikt i världens mysterier.
