Johnny Cash dog den 12 september 2003. Månaderna innan hans död spelade han in nytt material tillsammans med producenten Rick Rubin. Albumet "American V: A hundred highways" innehåller låtar skrivna av låtskrivare som Hank Williams, Rod McKuen, Bruce Springsteen, Don Gibson m fl. Dessutom innehåller albumet två låtar skrivna av Cash själv varav låten "Like the 309" var den sista låt han skrev och spelade in. <br/><br/>"I think that 'American V' may be my favorite of all the albums in the American series.
