När Alvin Straight får veta att hans bror inte har lång tid kvar att leva bestämmer han sig för att fara i väg och sluta fred med honom. Alvins hälsa är dålig och hans syn är ännu sämre, men envishet och tålamod har han gott om. Så trots att han inte äger någon bil och inte har råd att köpa en bussbiljett så beger han sig i väg ändå - på sin trettio år gamla gräsklippartraktor! Framför sig har han en 52 mil lång resa från Iowa till Wisconsin - med en toppfart på 8 km/h.
