Padilha looks behind the event at the circumstances of Sandro's life: he had watched his mother's brutal murder as a small boy, and managed to survive the 1993 massacre of homeless children at Candelária. On the 27th of June 1976, Kuhlmann and Böse, members of German Revolutionary Cells, alongside two others are under instruction to hijack a plane to force the government to release militants being held in prison in Israel. With the objective of trading the 248 hostage passengers for these prisoners as well as Palestinians and prisoners held in other countries, a 7-day stand-off ensues as they attempt to bargain with the Israeli government and threaten that if their demands are not met, their hostages will be killed.
