I slutet av 1800-talet får operafantasten Fitzcarraldo en vision om att han ska bygga ett operahus längst in i Amazonas regnskog. Alla utom hans trogna följeslagerska, bordellmamman Molly, anser att han är skvatt galen. Segerviss beger sig Fitzcarraldo in i djungeln ombord på en stor ångbåt, men stöter på hinder när ett berg envist ligger mellan honom och hans dröm. För att nå sitt mål bestämmer han sig för att göra det omöjliga - att släpa hela båten över berget!<br/><br/>Inspelningen av den verklighetsbaserade FITZCARRALDO är en av historiens mest omskrivna, kantad av stora bråk mellan regissören Herzog och den ökänt argsinte skådespelaren Kinski. 16 år efter Abel Ferraras kontroversiella och uppmärksammade BAD LIEUTENANT med Harvey Keitel i titelrollen, har Werner Herzog nu inlett inspelningen av en ny version. Vi får följa en polis vardag, hans utredningar i mordfall, men även hans egna drifter, ovanor och missbruk. Han har stora spelskulder och satsar mer och mer för att kunna betala av sina skulder. Han missbrukar droger, söker sig till prostituerade och använder sin ställning till att utnyttja tonårsflickor sexuellt.
