The first dream, 'Sunshine Through the Rain', depicts the belief that foxes marry when the sun shines through a rainstorm. 'The Peach Orchard' follows the link between a doll festival and fruit trees which have the power to bring the dolls to life. In 'The Blizzard', a group of mountaineers struggle to walk on as the snow hampers their progress. 'The Tunnel' follows the journey of a discharged commander who is returning home from the Second World War. In 'Crows', Martin Scorsese stars as Vincent Van Gogh who is discovered when an art student travels through one of his paintings. 'Mount Fuji in Red' follows the chaos that ensues after six reactors at a nuclear plant near Mount Fuji explode, filling the skies with bright red fumes. In 'The Weeping Demon', a boy lost in the mountains comes across a horned man who explains that a holocaust has wiped out the human race. In 16th century Japan, rival warlords battle for supremacy. Impoverished potter Genjuro (Masayuki Mori) leaves his wife Miyagi (Kinuyo Tanaka) and their son to take his wares to the city to sell, despite Miyagi's fears for their safety with an army so close by. His brother Tobei (Sakae Ozawa), who dreams of becoming a samurai, also leaves his wife Ohama (Mitsuko Mito) and accompanies Genjuro. As he grows from a young boy to become one of Japan's most successful writers, Mishima (Ken Ogata) mourns Japan's lost traditions. After leading a failed coup, he commits ritualistic suicide on 25th November 1970. After attacking Tokyo, Godzilla is imprisoned in a mountain and various international factions compete to possess the monster's cells for the purposes of experimentation. Scientist Genshiro Shiragami (Kôji Takahashi) is hoping to genetically modify plants using Godzilla's cells but when mercenaries attack his lab, his daughter Erika (Yasuko Sawaguchi) is killed. Overcome with grief, Shiragami combines cells from Godzilla with those from a rose and from Erika and creates a hybrid he names Biollante. Cop 223 (Takeshi Kaneshiro) has recently been dumped by his girlfriend and finds himself drawn to a mysterious woman in a blonde wig (Brigitte Lin), unaware that she is involved in drug smuggling. Meanwhile Cop 663 (Tony Leung) has also recently broken up with his girlfriend. He meets Faye (Faye Wong) at a food stand he visits regularly and she soon falls for him. After finding out where he lives, she begins secretly cleaning and redecorating his apartment to help cheer him up.
