'Pather Panchali' (1955) tells the story of a family living in the grip of poverty in a small Bengali village, focusing on the experiences of young boy Apu (Subir Bandopadhyay). 'Aparajito' (1956) sees Apu (Smaran Ghosal) move with his family to the busy city of Benares where they hope to build a new life after suffering a devastating family tragedy. But when Apu's father dies, the young man decides to head out on his own and attend college in Calcutta, leading to a growing estrangement between him and his widowed mother. Finally, in 'The World of Apu' (1959), the adult Apu (Soumitra Chatterjee) hopes to become a writer, but his lack of finances forces him to abandon his university studies. He meets old friend Pulu (Swapan Mukherjee) and together they travel to the wedding of Pulu's cousin, Aparna (Sharmila Tagore). When the wedding is cancelled, Apu agrees to marry Aparna to save her from ridicule. 'A Confucian Confusion' (1994) follows a group of young friends, lovers, co-workers and acquaintances in Taipei over the course of three days. Molly (Shu-Chun Ni) manages an entertainment company but her friend and assistant Qiqi (Chen Shiang-chyi) is questioning both her job and her relationship with her fiancé Ming (Wang Wei-Ming). Meanwhile, Molly is engaged to Akeem (Bosen Wang) but his friend Larry (Danny Deng) is intent on pursuing her himself, despite the fact that he already has a wife and a mistress, the latter of whom works for Molly. As they reflect on the emptiness of their lives, they take steps to change their futures. In 'Mahjong' (1996) Red Fish (Tang Tsung Sheng) leads a group of young criminals running scams in Taipei. When two truck drivers, Goro (Tsutomu Yamazaki) and Gun (Ken Watanabe), stop at a noodle shop, they witness a young boy being beaten up and step in to help. When they discover that the boy is the son of the shop's owner Tampopo (Nobuko Miyamoto), they also learn that her business is struggling and try to think of ways to help her out.
