In 'Before Sunrise' (1995) American student Jesse is travelling his way around Europe. He strikes up a conversation on a train with a young Parisian woman and on the spur of the moment invites her to spend the day with him in Vienna. As the day wears on, a casual acquaintance turns into something more profound. In 'Before Sunset' (2004) Jesse and Céline cross paths again in Paris where they get the chance to catch up on all that has occurred in their lives since their first meeting. Jesse, now married with a young child, has become a successful novelist. He is on a whirlwind European tour when he stops off at a bookshop in Paris, and Céline, who now works for an environmental organisation, comes to the reading. In the 80 minutes before his plane leaves the two stroll around the streets of Paris and discuss their views, experiences, hopes and dreams. Finally, in 'Before Midnight' (2013), 18 years have passed since Jesse and Céline first met. Jesse's novel based on the experience became a US bestseller and led him to meet Céline again after an interval of almost a decade, where the spark of their initial encounter was still present. Now the couple are living in Paris, proud parents to two young girls. However, their lives are far from perfect. Frustrated at her inability to match Jesse's professional success, Céline is considering a change in career. 'Pather Panchali' (1955) tells the story of a family living in the grip of poverty in a small Bengali village, focusing on the experiences of young boy Apu (Subir Bandopadhyay). 'Aparajito' (1956) sees Apu (Smaran Ghosal) move with his family to the busy city of Benares where they hope to build a new life after suffering a devastating family tragedy. But when Apu's father dies, the young man decides to head out on his own and attend college in Calcutta, leading to a growing estrangement between him and his widowed mother. Finally, in 'The World of Apu' (1959), the adult Apu (Soumitra Chatterjee) hopes to become a writer, but his lack of finances forces him to abandon his university studies. He meets old friend Pulu (Swapan Mukherjee) and together they travel to the wedding of Pulu's cousin, Aparna (Sharmila Tagore). When the wedding is cancelled, Apu agrees to marry Aparna to save her from ridicule. In 'Freaks' (1932), when trapeze artist Cleopatra (Olga Baclanova) learns that Hans (Harry Earles) stands to inherit a sizeable amount of money, she decides to seduce him and colludes with her lover, the strongman Hercules (Henry Victor), to kill Hans so that she can inherit his wealth. When the rest of the carnival performers learn of the plot, their revenge is swift and grotesque. 'The Unknown' (1927) stars Lon Chaney as knife thrower Alonzo the Armless. A fugitive on the run from the law, Alonzo keeps his arms strapped tightly to his torso, a secret known only to one person. He is in love with Nanon (Joan Crawford), his assistant, but his competition with strongman Malabar (Norman Kerry) for her affections leads to tragedy. In 'Infernal Affairs' (2002) the cops and the Triads have something in common: each has a mole in their midst. Lau Kin Ming (Andy Lau) and Chen Ying Yan (Tony Leung) have been leading parallel lives: Ming is a Triad mole who has infiltrated the police department and Yan is an undercover cop who has, over the years, risen to a position of authority in the Triad gang. Both are dissatisfied with their position, wishing they could put their false lives behind them. Then one night the two men's paths finally cross during a police raid. Both the police and the Triads realise they have informers amongst them and the race begins for Ming and Yan to get out alive. 'Infernal Affairs 2' (2003) is a prequel, set ten years before the events of the original film. Yan (Shawn Yue) has just become an undercover cop in the Triads, while Ming (Edison Chen) is a new recruit to the police force. Bitter enemies in the first film, Inspector Wong (Anthony Wong) and Sam (Eric Tsang) are behaving like old friends, while Yan is embroiled in the family saga of a Triad cartel and Ming has developed an oedipal fixation on his boss's wife. As friendships fracture and foes join forces, nothing is as it first appears to be. Finally, in 'Infernal Affairs 3' (2003) Ming (Lau)'s career is on the slide following the bloody events of the first film, and he has been transferred to office work while he undergoes an investigation by internal affairs. Suspicious of new rising star Yeung (Leon Lai), Ming begins to investigate his background, convinced that he could be a double-agent working for the notorious Triad gangs.
