Låtarna i Out Among The Stars spelades från början in i Nashville, Tennessee i 'Columbia Studios' i 1981 och '1111 Sound Studios' i 1984 och producerades av Billy Sherrill som ansvarade för A&R på CBS Records Nashville vid det tillfället. Då Cash hamnade i konflikt med Billy Sherrill valde han att inte släppa albumet. Han tog hem inspelningarna som inte sett dagens ljus förrän nu. <br/><br/>På albumet - som bl.a. innehåller duetter med June Carter Cash och Waylon Jennings - jobbade Johnny med en omfattande ensemble bestående en ung Marty Stuart på gitarr och mandolin och Nashville A-Team medlemmarna Jerry Kennedy (gitarr), Pete Drake (steel guitar), Hargus "Pig" Robbins (piano) and Henry Strzelecki (bas). <br/><br/>Inspelningarna på Out Among The Stars dök först upp 2012, när John Carter Cash, tillsammans med Cash experterna på Legacy, katalogiserade sin fars och mors arkiv i Hendersonville, Tennessee och på Sony Music Archives. "When my parents passed away, it became necessary to go through this material," säger John carter Cash. "We found these recordings that were produced by Billy Sherrill in the early 1980s.they were beautiful." <br/><br/>John Carter Cash, tillsammans med samproducenten och arkivarien Steve Berkowitz samlade Marty Stuart, Buddy Miller och Carlene Carter, såväl som andra mästarmusiker, att samarbeta för att återställa albumet på Cash Cabin Studios i Hendersonville, TN.
