Listening to the tracks here made Bob Dylan, Eric Clapton, Keith Richards, Peter Green, Jimmy Page and untold others decide that music would be their life. When his first long player came out in 1961, Robert Johnson had already been dead for 23 years. Little was known of his life, save for the handful of recordings released during his lifetime, and consequently the legend has too often overshadowed the powerful, haunting music Robert Johnson made. Remarkably, for half a century there wasn't even a photograph of him.

One of the most influential artists from the southern parts of the United States is undoubtedly Leadbelly. Gifted with the ability to write thought provoking lyrics, he became a true master of the folk and blues scene. More than just a musician, Leadbelly was a force of nature. And one of his songs sparked a revolution when Lonnie Donegan's 1956 hit Rock Island Line inspired not just The Beatles, but pretty well every fledgling Brit rock & roller with a new type of music called skiffle.

From the early 1950s through to the early 1960s Wells recorded a number of singles as a solo artist for various labels including States Records, USA, Chief Records (and its subsidiary, Profile Records), and it's that period that forms the basis of this 2-LP set. Wells wrote or co-wrote over half the songs here; several more tracks were written by Mel London, the house producer and owner of Chief Records. It's an interesting collection, full of great rarities.
