Their dreams are haunted by the hideously scarred former child murderer Freddy Krueger (Robert Englund) who, it soon transpires, has the power to kill them in their sleep. Freddy is out to exact his revenge on the children of those who burned him alive in retribution for his crimes, and the only way to avoid his reprisals is to avoid sleep - but Nancy knows that she can't stay awake for ever. The sequel 'Freddy's Revenge' is set five years after the original. The Walsh family have now moved into the house formerly owned by the Thompsons, and it is not long before teenage son Jesse (Mark Patton) is having bad dreams. He and girlfriend Lisa attempt to work out what is happening to him, but before long Jesse becomes convinced that Freddy has taken over his body in order to continue his murderous rampage. The second sequel, 'Dream Warriors', features the return of Nancy from the first film, now a psychiatric doctor. She teams up with Dr Neil Goldman (Craig Wasson) when a group of teenagers at his hospital begin to suffer a shared nightmare, and soon realises that Freddy has returned to continue wreaking his revenge on the descendants of those who killed him. By the fourth film, 'The Dream Master', Freddy has killed off all the children of those who originally burnt him to death. Now he's starting to kill their teenage friends. Luckily, Alice Johnson (Lisa Wilcox), one of the endangered kids, has the special ability to bring others into her dreams. She is the Dream Master, and therefore the only one who can stop the razor-fingered prankster from wreaking more of his murderous havoc. In 'The Dream Child', Alice is expecting a baby. Unfortunately for her, the meddlesome Freddy finds out about this and begins to control the foetus's dreams, hoping that the birth will be his means of returning to the land of the living. So the Dream Master sets to work, taking the battle to Krueger one final time. In 'Freddy's Dead - The Final Nightmare', having wiped out all the children in his home town, dreamstalking psychokiller Freddy decides it is time to head for pastures new. Luckily for him, he happens across a home for troubled teens and is soon indulging his unspeakable appetites once again. This was originally intended to be the final instalment in the 'Nightmare on Elm Street' series, but director Wes Craven was unable to resist bringing Freddy back one more time in his 1994 'Wes Craven's New Nightmare', a coda to the series in which Craven and his producer play themselves, persuading the now grown-up Heather Langenkamp (of the first film) to return to Elm Street one more time. 'Batman Begins' (2005) explores the origins of the Batman legend and the Dark Knight's emergence as a force for good in Gotham. In the wake of his parents' murder, disillusioned industrial heir Bruce Wayne (Christian Bale) travels the world seeking the means to fight injustice and turn fear against those who prey on the fearful. He returns to Gotham and unveils his alter-ego: Batman, a masked crusader who uses his strength, intellect and an array of high-tech deceptions to fight the sinister forces that threaten the city. In 'The Prestige' (2006) Rupert Angier (Hugh Jackman) and Alfred Borden (Bale) are London-based magicians of the highest order, both blessed with spectacular powers of deception and both cursed with unrelenting envy for one another's skills. When Alfred performs an awe-inspiring trick for which there seems no logical explanation, the friendly competition shared between the pair turns to deadly rivalry as the enraged Rupert determines to uncover his rival's deepest secrets. 'The Dark Knight' (2008), the sequel to 'Batman Begins' (2005), sees Gotham's hero squaring-up to a new kid on the block - psychotic prankster The Joker (Heath Ledger). In 'Inception' (2010) Dom Cobb (Leonardo DiCaprio) is a professional thief with a difference: the spoils he goes after are not material objects but the thoughts, dreams and secrets buried in the minds of other people. In 'Interstellar' (2014), on a resource-depleted Earth in the near future, the discovery of a wormhole which can transport users through time and space unites scientists and explorers in the most important mission in human history. Among the potential travellers is a widowed engineer (Matthew McConaughey) who must decide whether to remain with his two children or to test the limits of human space travel, to see if there is a future for humanity out among the stars or whether the end of the Earth spells the end for humanity. 'Dunkirk' (2017) tells the story of the Dunkirk evacuation during the Second World War. In May 1940, hundreds of thousands of Allied soldiers are trapped on the beaches of Dunkirk after being pushed back by the German army during the Battle of France, prompting a massive rescue operation to evacuate them. As the evacuation, code-named Operation Dynamo, gets underway, the soldiers of the British Expeditionary Force holds a shrinking position as the Nazis advance upon them. Meanwhile, civilian sailors back home are called upon to use whatever vessels they have to aid the rescue effort across the Channel as the Royal Air Force tries to defend the vulnerable troops on the ground from the skies. Finally, in 'Tenet' (2020), while attempting to foil a terrorist attack in Kiev, the Protagonist (John David Washington) learns of a future technology capable of reversing time. Employed by a shadowy international organisation, the Protagonist works with handler Neil (Robert Pattinson) on a mission to investigate the origins of the future technology as they race to prevent it from being used to destroy the world.

'Spartacus' (1960) concerns the efforts of the slave-gladiator Spartacus (Kirk Douglas) to lead the slaves of the Roman Empire in a rebellion against their masters. The ranks quickly swell as the slave army makes its way across Italy towards the coast. However, the despotic Roman senator Crassus (Laurence Olivier) determines to quell the revolt for his own selfish ends, and the stage is thus set for a tremendous battle. In '2001 - A Space Odyssey' (1968), at the dawn of mankind, a tribe of ape-like beings are visited on Earth by a large black monolith. Thousands of years later, in the year 2001, scientist Dr Heywood Floyd (William Sylvester) discovers a similar black monolith on the moon, which then emits a signal aimed at the planet Jupiter. A year later, astronauts Dr David Bowman (Keir Dullea) and Dr Frank Poole (Gary Lockwood) are en route to Jupiter to investigate the signal's destination and purpose. However, their mission comes under threat when their ship's sentient computer, HAL (voice of Douglas Rain), seemingly develops a malfunction. 'A Clockwork Orange' (1971) follows sadistic punk Alex (Malcolm McDowell) as he takes his gang on a rape and murder spree, showing absolutely no mercy to any of his victims. When he is eventually captured, the authorities subject him to a series of experiments designed to rid him of his violent tendencies. In 'The Shining' (1980), seeking solitude in order to write a novel, Jack Torrance (Jack Nicholson) takes a job as an off-season caretaker at the remote Overlook Hotel in Colorado. Eager to get started, Jack disregards warnings that the isolation drove a former caretaker mad, and moves into the massive resort with his wife Wendy (Shelley Duvall) and son Danny (Danny Lloyd). But Danny has a supernatural gift which makes him aware of an evil lurking in the hotel, and sure enough, as winter storms cut the hotel off from civilisation, Jack gradually becomes murderously insane. Finally, 'Full Metal Jacket' (1987) details the dehumanising effect of military combat, as experienced by a bunch of Vietnam conscripts under the training of the sadistic Gunnery Sergeant Hartman (R.
