As winter comes and the hours of darkness overtake the light, we seek out warmth, good food, and good company. But beneath the jollity and bright enchantment of the festive season, there lurks a darker mood - one that has found expression over the centuries in a host of strange and unsettling traditions and lore. Here, Sarah Clegg takes us on a journey through midwinter to explore the lesser-known Christmas traditions, from English mummers plays and Austrian Krampus runs, to modern pagan rituals at Stonehenge and the night in Finland when a young girl is crowned with candles as St Lucy - a martyred Christian girl who also appears as a witch leading a procession of the dead. At wassails and hoodenings and winter gatherings, attended by ghastly, grinning horses, snatching monsters and mysterious visitors, we discover how these traditions originated and how they changed through the centuries, and we ask ourselves: if we can't keep the darkness entirely at bay, might it be fun to let a little in?

Hrefna Róbertsdóttir, historian, explores economic thought in Iceland and Denmark in the 18th century and relates it to local wool production in Iceland in the second half of the century. In the process, she sheds new light on 18th-century society and draws attention to various economic, social and moral aspects of manufacturing. Ultimately, she views the introduction of manufacturing in the 18th century as internal utilisation within the old order, rather than as a harbinger of the future changes and industrialisation of the 19th century. Wool and Society Manufacturing Policy, Economic Thought and Local Production in 18th-century Iceland is a doctoral thesis in history, submitted to the Department of History at the University of Lund in Sweden.

Tyresö Palace is a stately home south of Stockholm, owned by the Nordic Museum. Today it is encircled by urban expansion, yet it dominates the surroundings with its beautiful location at the highest point of a peninsula in the inner archipelago. The present palace was originally built in the 1630s, but the interior that visitors meet today shows what it looked like as a private country residence around 1900. The book tells about the history of the site, of the buildings and parks, and also about owners, servants and visiting artists.

The main building of the Nordic Museum on the island of Djurgården in Stockholm is an architectural landmark. The huge edifice can be seen from far off, from all angles, and when one comes closer one can discern fascinating details of artistic expression, material, and craft skill. The architect Isak Gustaf Clason made allusions to several different historical styles when he designed the building at the end of the nineteenth century. Today the building is instead historical in the sense that it so clearly manifests its own time. This book, based on notes, drawings and pictures from the museums archives, tells of the entire structure, its character, its construction history, and its world of references.
