Indonesien, 1942. Under en brännhet sol förtvinar sex hundra brittiska fångar i ett japanskt fångläger, där fascisten Kapten Yonio styr med kompromisslös disciplin och krav på lydnad. Yonio betraktar sina fångar som ynkryggar de har valt kapitulation framför en ärorik död. En dag anländer en ny fånge: kommandosoldaten Jack Cellier. Kaptenen ser i Jack en jämlike, den värdige motståndare han länge väntat på. Yonio gör sitt yttersta för att bryta ner nykomlingen.<br/><br/>I "Merry Christmas Mr Lawrence" fortsätter krigets grymheter innanför lägrets murar, i en bitter kamp mellan starka psyken. Två mäns orubbliga viljor möts i en brutal uppgörelse. Men trots att de kommer från olika världar, visar det sig att stolthet inte känner några gränser.

Adapted from Les Standiford's novel of the same name, the film follows Charles Dickens (Stevens) as he attempts to get his career back on track with the release of his new book 'A Christmas Carol' in 1843. Having been rejected by his publishers following the failure of his previous work, Dickens sets about writing his new festive story in a hectic six-week period, combining real-life experiences with his vivid imagination to create a Christmas tale which could stand the test of time and become a family favourite for years to come.<br/><br/>The cast also includes Jonathan Pryce (Brazil Pirates of the Caribbean, Game of Thrones), Miriam Margolyes (Yentl, Little Shop of Horrors, Little Dorrit), Donald Sumpter (The Black Panther, Game of Thrones), and Morfydd Clark (The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power).
