What The Wild Sea Can Be Bok

No matter where we live, 'we are all ocean people,' Helen Scales observes in her bracing yet hopeful exploration of the future of the ocean. Beginning with its fascinating deep history, Scales links past to present to show how prehistoric ocean ecology holds lessons for the ocean of today. In elegant, evocative prose, she takes readers into the realms of animals that epitomize current increasingly challenging conditions, from emperor penguins to sharks and orcas.

Yet despite these threats, many hopeful signs remain. Increasing numbers of no-fish zones around the world are restoring once-diminishing populations. Astonishing giant kelp and sea grass forests, rivaling those on land, are being regenerated and expanded, while efforts to reengineer coral reefs for a warmer world are growing.

Offering innovative ideas for protecting coastlines and cleaning the toxic seas, Scales insists we need more ethical and sustainable fisheries and must prevent the other existential threat of deep-sea mining, which could significantly alter life on earth. Inspiring us all to maintain a sense of awe and wonder at the majesty beneath the waves, she urges us to fight for the better future that still exists for the Anthropocene ocean.

An awestruck love letter to one of the most spectacular places on earth, from the author of international bestseller The Eight Mountains

Paolo Cognetti marked his 40th birthday with a journey he had always wanted to make: to Dolpo, a remote Himalayan region where Nepal meets Tibet. He took with him two friends, a notebook, mules and guides, and a well-worn copy of The Snow Leopard. Written in 1978, Matthiessen's classic was also turning forty, and Cognetti set out to walk in the footsteps of the great adventurer.

Without Ever Reaching the Summit combines travel journal, secular pilgrimage, literary homage and sublime mountain writing in a short book for readers of Macfarlane, Rebanks and Cognetti's own bestseller, The Eight Mountains. An investigation into the author's physical limits, an ancient mountain culture, and the magnificence of nature, it is an awestruck love letter to one of the most spectacular places on earth.

Living On Earth Bok
The eagerly anticipated conclusion to Peter Godfrey-Smith's three-part exploration of the origins of intelligence on Earth, which began with the bestselling Other Minds in 2018 and continued with Metazoa in 2020.
Peter Godfrey-Smith, the scuba-diving philosopher, examined the evolution of sentience in Other Minds. In Metazoa he asked how that consciousness shaped and was shaped by animal bodies. Now, in Living on Earth, he takes that line of questioning a step further, asking, how has life shaped and been shaped by our planet?

He explores the last living stromatolite fields, examples of how cyanobacteria from the sea first began colonising the land and belching oxygen into the atmosphere as they photosynthesised the sun's light. Oxygen meant life, and so began a riotous tangle of coevolution between plants and new animals. And then, in our own evolutionary line, an initially unremarkable mammal changed in new ways, forming societies and technologies. This led eventually to change to the atmosphere itself, as carbon that was buried and transformed to oil was deliberately burned with life-derived oxygen, to power the elaborate world of humanity.

Humans belong to the infinitely complex system that is the Earth, and our minds are products of that system, but they are also an acting force within it. We are creatures of Earth, and we hold Earth's future in our hands.

Lost Wonders Bok

Many scientists believe that we are currently living through the Earth's sixth mass extinction, with species disappearing at a rate not seen for tens of millions of years - a trend that will only accelerate as climate change and other pressures intensify. What does it mean to live in such a time? And what exactly do we lose when a species goes extinct?

In Lost Wonders author and journalist Tom Lathan tells the stories of ten species that have lived, died out and been declared extinct since the turn of the twenty-first century. In a series of fascinating encounters with subjects that are now nowhere to be found on Earth - from giant tortoises to minuscule snails the size of sesame seeds, from ocean-hopping trees to fish that wag their tails like puppies - Lathan brings these lost wonders briefly back to life and gives us a tantalising glimpse of what we have lost within our own lifetime.

Drawing on the personal recollections of the people who studied these species, as well as those who tried but ultimately failed to save them, Lost Wonders is an intimate portrait of the species that have only recently vanished from our world and an urgent warning to hold on all the more tightly to those now slipping from our grasp.

The Ultimate Guide To The Constellations And Planets Bok
This is a highly practical guide to identifying the constellations and the stars that comprise them. Geoffrey Cornelius, astronomy expert and teacher, brings star-watching vividly to life by conveying the rich symbolic significance that the heavens assumed in many cultures, from the Babylonians to the ancient Greeks. Master star navigation by building your knowledge rather than relying on technology. "Signpost charts" make finding stars easy. Assuming no prior knowledge of astronomy, the book concentrates on features that can be made out with the naked eye or binoculars. All 88 Major and Minor Constellations, and the planets, included. Along with beautiful 4-colour illustrations of each, and the myths and legends behind hundreds of individual stars, lose yourself in the magic of the night sky. Plan your year around the unmissable celestial moments with the "full-sky maps" that show which constellations are viewable and where, every month. Whether you're a budding astronomer looking to deepen your understanding, or an astrologer hoping to learn more about the ancient myths that were formed in the sky, you'll find everything you need in this comprehensive introduction.

The Future Of Dinosaurs Bok

Discover the latest frontiers in dinosaur research with Dr David Hone.

Ever since we first started discovering dinosaurs in the early-1800s, our obsession for uncovering everything about these creatures has been insatiable. Each generation has made huge strides in trying to better our understanding of these animals and in the past twenty years, we have made more discoveries than in the previous two hundred.

There have been extraordinary advances in palaeontological methods and ever more dinosaur fossils promise a landslide of new data and huge leaps forward in our understanding of these incredible animals. Over time, we have been bale to look at the sizes and shapes of bones, we have identified patches of fossil skin, we have looked at footprints and bite marks and we've calculated mass estimates and walking speeds.

With surprisingly little data to work from, we can put together a picture of an animal that has been extinct for a million human lifetimes. But for all our technological advances, and two centuries of new data and ideas, there is stull much more we don't know. What parasites and diseases afflicted them? How did they communicate? Did they climb trees? How many species were there?

In The Future of Dinosaurs, palaeontologist Dr David Hone looks at the recent strides in scientific research and the advanced knowledge we've gathered in recent years, as well as what we hope to learn in the future about these most fascinating of extinct creatures.
